With the river season well underway here at Taskers Angling we thought it would be a good time to look at some good tips ahead of what should hopefully be a successful season! As the heat picks up significantly from Spring all anglers should first of all make sure they are looking after themselves, this includes drinking plenty of water and making sure you are prepared for the heat.
So when is the best time to go river fishing in the summer. We would recommend trying to go either early morning or late evening. Whilst this is the time fish are likely to be the most active it is also a time when you can catch the sunrise and sunset meaning you can hopefully take in some great views. It may be that you do both by night fishing, if you are then make sure you have a dependable bedchair and bivvy for your time by the water.
Secondly we would recommend researching your chosen venue. This can either be by reading up on where it is you are going or even by taking a trip there before just to look at the water and surroundings without actually getting the rods out. Walk the stretch of the river so you can work out some of the best spots that you can pitch up at and where the most activity seems to be. Its also a good idea to speak to anglers who fish their regularly, whilst we cant guarantee they will share their tips with you its worth a try!
After researching your venue and trying to find out as much as you can now it is time to find the best spot. Look for weir pools and areas of deeper water along the river, especially those immediately after shallow fast-flowing waters as they can be very productive places to fish. Remember as well to scout out the river features, both above and below the water line and look for any overhanging trees or reed beds which provide shelter and a food source.
In terms of which bait you should use we would recommend that right at the start of the river fishing season use natural bait. Things like maggots, worms and hemp will be the kind of things fish will of been eating whilst the anglers would of been away so these are great to use!
We hope that as many of you manage to make the most of river fishing season as possible. If you have any questions about what gear you may need then please visit our Liverpool store or give us a call on 01512606015.
